Iowa's Only Isadora Duncan Representative

February 25, 20104:16 PM MST
Not the ballet type? Don't think the study of dance is for you?  Wait!...Have you discovered the joy and freedom of modern dance, Isadora Duncan style? If not, you must pay a visit to Rebecca Bachar's Des Moines studio.  She can help you discover your inner dancer.
Rebecca is now teaching Isadora Duncan Dance classes for both children and adults at Des Moines' Firehouse Yoga Studio, located at 2300 University Ave.  She is New York trained and holds a certificate in Isadora Duncan Studies from New  York City University professor, Jeanne Bresciani.
One can have great confidence in each of these dance educators when considering their qualifications. Bresciani holds both an MA and PhD in Dance and is known worldwide as a solo performer, choregrapher, lecturer, and creator of festivals.  She has been artistic director of the Isadora Duncan International Institute and has performed at Lincoln Center, at the United Nations, the Olympics, and various National Museums.
Bachar, in turn, having earned her Duncan certification through Bresciani's tutelage, has had 43 years' dance experience and 15 years' teaching experience.  She has been practicing Isadora Duncan Dance for 16 years and has performed in Greece, Albania, New York, Chicago, and Iowa.  Before relocating to Des Moines, she was  the Director of the Temple Studio of Fine Arts and the Duncan Dance Company.  She is the only Isadora Duncan representative in Iowa.
Isadora Duncan, free soul that she was, began a dance movement that has resulted in a dance technique that features these concepts: 1) That movement travels in rays through the body, originating and emanating from the solar plexus(the top of the ribcage, where the two sides connect, below the breastbone,) 2) There's so such thing as a straight line in nature, so, there are no straight lines in Duncan dance;. i.e. toes aren't pointed, there are no sharp edges, etc. 3) There is no forced turn-out;it's always an anatomical turn-out, 4) There is no bondage; even the strongest movements are in a free, more flowing style, 5) Duncan dancers are body, mind, emotions, spirit, and nature-embodied, 6) Dancing to the various types of waves in the world; such as wave patterns in water, light and sound, so as to rid the body of rigidity, 7) A sense of rhythm and exposure to singing, as a form of instruction, are both employed early in training, 8) There is a big emphasis on skipping and other expressions of buoyancy, 9) The core move is to find one's center in the solar plexus, breathe, and find oneself in harmony with the vastness of nature, music and the stimulus of others.
Dancing to waves?...Rid the body of rigidity?...Buoyancy?...Being harmonious with nature?...Freedom from traditional dance constraints? ...If these ideas appeal to you, you will want to contact Rebecca yesterday!
